This Webpage is dedicated to my son, Michael Adam Hampson. Sunrise: February 17, 1983 - Sunset: August 21, 2004. Michael was a victim of murder. He was shot in the chest on August 17, 2004, and died just days later on August 21, 2004. Take action: talk to your legislators, write letters to members of congress, become educated about gun violence and gun safety issues in your community, help to make sensible gun laws for everyone, get involved with your local Million Mom March Chapter or Brady Bill Campaign for Safer Gun Initiatives, and make a move to help reduce gun violence. It is your RIGHT to live in a safe and gun-violence free community.

*****************************************
"The Greater Phoenix Million Mom March Chapter will hold a candlelight vigil at the Arizona State Capitol (1700 W. Washington, east lawn) on Thursday, November 2, 2006, starting at 6:00 P.M., in honor and memory of those whose lives have been affected by gun violence. Participants are asked to bring their own candles, if possible. There are plans to sell candles at the vigil, too. Our lit candles will represent those whose lives have been affected by gun violence, and represent those who hope their lives are NEVER affected by gun violence.
Arizona has very few gun laws and none of the existing gun laws are really designed to help protect our children, communities, etc. As you go to vote on November 7, please look into the various senate and house candidates and support politicians who support gun violence prevention (details will be provided at the vigil).
At the vigil, participants will have the opportunity to announce their loved one’s name, age, and relationship. They will light a candle in honor of them and ring a bell, too. Then, as their candles burn strong, they will gather around the reflective fountain to commemorate the vigil. The date of the vigil is on All Souls Day and it marks the one month anniversary of the Amish school shootings.
Please contact the Greater Phoenix Million Mom March Chapter for more details about how you can get involved with gun violence prevention or more details on our candlelight vigil – www.mmmphoenix.org.”

Happy Birthday Dear Michael, You Would Have Been 23 Years Old:

You can send in a donation as a gift or a memorial donation in memory of a loved one you've lost. You'll receive a beautiful card of recognition in receipt of your donation. Your donation will be distributed to students with an academic need who are attending college. The main focus will be on students attending Culinary Arts Programs, but other areas of specialization will be considered, as well. We anticipate that our first Scholarship Awards will be in August 2006, around the time of Michael's 2-year anniversary date. Please watch for the scholarship guidelines, application, deadlines, etc. at this website.
Michael's Two-Year Anniversary: We celebrated Michael's life in honor and respect. As with last year, we limited the celebration of Michael's life to our immediate family and a few intimate friends. We met at Coyoacan Mexican Steak House for a memorial dinner. Then we did our traditional balloon release afterwards.
Thank you to everyone who attended – you have made such a difference in our lives.. For those not present, please plan to attend next year as we celebrate Michael’s 24th birthday on February 17. Hopefull it will be at the Art Institute of Phoenix. We'll celebrate Michael's three-year anniversary on August 21, 2007. Location and time to be announced.
Michae'ls One-Year Anniversary: We celebrated Michael’s life the day before the one-year anniversary of his death. On Saturday, August 20, 2005, our family and friends met at our house. We then went to Los Dos Molinos (Central and Dobbins) for a celebration/memorial dinner. Afterwards, we returned to our house for dessert: a beautiful homemade cake that my sister, Michael’s Aunt Jean, made especially in honor of Michael. After cake and ice cream, all of our guests were invited to take as many helium-filled balloons as they liked and write loving messages not only to Michael, but also to other loved ones they’d lost in the past, as well.
Once everyone finished writing their messages to Michael on their balloons, we went outside near the new Jacaranda tree that we had planted in memory of Michael. We gathered in a big circle holding our anxiously awaiting balloons. I spoke briefly regarding how much Michael loved and respected everyone who was there, in life and in death. They indulged me by allowing me to read a poem I’d written titled, “Sands of Time.”
Finally, I told everyone that as we “release” our balloons, we should try to release some of our own pain, grief, sadness, guilt, etc. along with our balloons. We are all still so devastated by Michael’s sudden and violent death, so I know that we can’t release all of our pain, but even if we release just one layer, it may help us just a tiny bit.
In the light of the full moon, we released all of our balloons into the moonlit sky, with a collective, “ahhh.” After lots of hugs, tears, and laughter, the evening ended with everyone taking home a memorial gift bag that included a framed picture of Michael, some poems and inspirational words, information on POMC (Parents of Murdered Children), information on The Michael Adam Hampson Memorial Scholarship Fund, several wrist bands that represented the Donor Network of Arizona, POMC, and one that said, “I have an angel in heaven.” I also included in each bag, a memorial music CD that I made in honor of Michael…oh, and of course some candy. It was a blessed day and an angelic evening that honored Michael’s life to the fullest.
Thank you to everyone who attended – you have made such a difference in our lives.. For those not present, please plan to attend next year as we celebrate Michael’s 23rd birthday on February 17, at the Art Institute of Phoenix, and his two-year anniversary on August 21, 2006.
